Struggling for the autonomy of Venezuela’s social movements

* This editorial comes from issue #53 (May-June 2008) of El Libertario, a Venezuelan anarchist voice of ideas and proposals for action. It confirms our commitment to autonomous social mobilization, which has already begun to express itself through concrete struggles from below, as in the recent steelworkers conflict.

In our wonderful, beautiful, glittering world of global high-tech, which finds itself in a severe capitalist crisis of overproduction, is the massive production of biofuels not a heinous "crime against humanity" (Jean Ziegler)?

With the Tibetan and Chinese Workers

Anonyme, Monday, April 7, 2008 - 21:22 (Analyses | Globalisation | Imperialism | Politics | Repression | Solidarite internationale)

We therefore have to express all our class solidarity with the Tibetan workers who are demonstrating and struggling with great courage, moved by the material necessity to get better living and working conditions But we need to clearly repeat that these aspirations can only be met if they can find a way to break from all nationalist, racist and clerical tendencies. On the contrary the struggles of the workers in Tibet needs to identify above all with the proletarian protests which continually break out all over China.

Call for long-termers

Its been a three weeks since clearing officially began for the NAFTA Superhighway, I-69. Trees have been felled in the first two miles (out of 142) of the route, and three out of the four homes (out of 400) which had already been seized by the Department of Transportation were demolished this week. Security is posted around the clearing sites, reflecting the state's fear of the wrath of local communities threatened by the road.

Mainstream and/or Commercial Media and the Status Quo

Anonyme, Sunday, January 13, 2008 - 12:18 (Analyses | Globalisation | Media | Politics)

Some ways in which the status quo is supported through mainstream media:

  • Little attention to ecology and nature (e.g. water depletion and pollution), let alone to the social causes and consequences of ‘environmental’ problems and proactive responses to these
  • Dominated through political economy (e.g. company “public relations? promotional efforts, including their press releases) that is largely concentrated and in the hands of the prominent few
  • Often uncritical parroting of representatives of dominant organizations and institutions (e.g. government)
  • Favouring audiences who are more privileged (e.g. ‘whiter’), while degrading others (e.g. ‘Arabs,’ who often are presented as terrorists)

Christmas message 2007: Against racism, poverty, war and exclusion of ''illegals''

Anonyme, Sunday, December 30, 2007 - 12:22 (Analyses | Globalisation | Guerre / War | Imperialism | Poverty | Racism | Religion)

Contrary with the hypocrisy of the traditional Christmas-celebrations and the consumption-hysteria, the message is to work for peace, against racism and exclusion of ''illegals''.

To say it shortly: the advancement of human rights, without distinction.
