Mainstream and/or Commercial Media and the Status Quo

First paragraph (Teaser):

Some ways in which the status quo is supported through mainstream media:

Little attention to ecology and nature (e.g. water depletion and pollution), let alone to the social causes and consequences of ‘environmental’ problems and proactive responses to these

Dominated through political economy (e.g. company “public relations? promotional efforts, including their press releases) that is largely concentrated and in the hands of the prominent few

Often uncritical parroting of representatives of dominant organizations and institutions (e.g. government)

Favouring audiences who are more privileged (e.g. ‘whiter’), while degrading others (e.g. ‘Arabs,’ who often are presented as terrorists)

The Annapolis Conference: Dead Man Walking

First paragraph (Teaser):

December 12, 2007, John Chuckman

The Annapolis Conference was, like so many political and diplomatic events of our time, highly choreographed, finely stage-managed, and heavily marketed. Yet, as soon as it was over, it was apparent little had happened, much as when a child opens a much-advertised, expensive plastic toy on Christmas, a brief, glitzy, big-eyed moment followed quickly by tedium. You might compare it to a George Bush press conference or any American presidential debate. Indeed, such choreographed non-events make up a fair portion of what Americans see on their evening news, a phenomenon we might call virtual or synthetic news.

Holland: students protest against 'dumbing down'

First paragraph (Teaser):

Tomorrow, Nov. 30th 2007, pupils in the whole country again will protest against the 'dumbing down' via their schools: they want 'quality' in their education. Not the government proscribed 'quantity' of 1040 school hours. The present school system - according to an education professor - is dangerous.

People at LM Ericsson in Sweden went on strike three decades ago because they refused to make telephones with build-in bugging software for the dictatorial Stroessner regime in Paraguay.
Our answer to the National Post's article on Cuba "Tropical Tyranny"

First paragraph (Teaser):

The one and only truthful fact about your article is that indeed, tourism is a very valuable economical asset for Cuban people. The rest of your sayings are pure lies and hypocritical half truths. Canadians should be proud to enjoy Cuba’s warm sun and spend money in that welcoming tropical paradise. By choosing Cuba as a favoured destination, Canadian tourists contribute to the income of a government that provides free education and free medical services for all its people.

CUPE criticizes the Environics poll: Why Canadian Forces Should Immediately Withdraw From Afghanistan

First paragraph (Teaser):

Excerpts: On 18 October 2007, two thousand delegates at the national convention of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) decided in a nearly unanimous vote to demand the Government of Canada immediately withdraw the Canadian Forces from Afghanistan. (...)

Later on the same day, CBC, the Globe and Mail, and La Presse released the results of a jointly-commissioned poll conducted in Afghanistan by the Canadian research firm Environics. The Environics poll indicates a large majority of Afghans want the Canadian Forces to remain in Afghanistan.
