The first message is a May Day greeting from a broad cross-section of union leaders from many different unions and labor federations in Iraq as an expression of their appreciation for the solidarity demonstrated by organized labor, working people and all peace-loving people of the world in support of their efforts to end the foreign occupation of Iraq and the sectarian violence that occupation has spawned.

The second is a statement of solidarity from the General Union of Port Workers in Iraq to the members of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) in support of the decision by ILWU members to shut down all the ports on the West Coast as a demonstration of their opposition to the war and occupation of Iraq.

Its been a three weeks since clearing officially began for the NAFTA Superhighway, I-69. Trees have been felled in the first two miles (out of 142) of the route, and three out of the four homes (out of 400) which had already been seized by the Department of Transportation were demolished this week. On July 25th, 2006, a Canadian peacekeeper with the UN in Lebanon was murdered when Israel bombed his bunker with a laser-guided "bunker busting" bomb. At the time, Prime Minister Harper said he would demand answers from the Israelis, but Israel refused to cooperate with the Canadian inquiry into the incident. The Canadian report came out last month, and there are no answers, even though the report holds Israel responsible for the death. To date, Canada has not put any pressure on Israel to provide additional information.

I was there when Mrs. Rosenberg died. I knew her from the five previous times I had responded to her apartment. She had a bad heart. She didn't like to call for help -- she'd wait until the pain was unbearable before she dialed 911. Even after all the polite lectures I had given her about calling right away when the pain started. Mrs. Rosenberg always said she didn't want to disturb anyone. She was sweet but stoic.
