Over 30 students from 5 Ontario Universities and Colleges have travelled to attend the New Orleans People’s Summit and participate in various actions opposing the Security and Prosperity Partnership (SPP).

Contrary to assurances from Prime Minister Harper, an SPP regulatory agreement signed at Montebello sets Canada on course toward a single North American regime for regulating industrial chemicals that will almost certainly weaken the existing Canadian regulatory system and erode policy autonomy, says a study released today by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives.

The CCPA study reveals that a sub-agreement on chemicals regulation was signed at Montebello, but it was not publicized and it was not posted on the Canadian government web site.

We met last Sunday [August 19th]. I was part of the popular education brigades that were organized by the Peoples’ Global Action of Montreal in an effort to explain to folks living in the Montebello area the reasons behind our position against the Partnership for Security and Prosperity (PSP), a “dialogue� that has been going on between Canadian, USA and Mexican leaders since 2005.

There is mounting evidence that military and police forces in charge of “security" for the SPP Summit in Montebello, this past weekend deployed "provocateurs" in order to instigate violence.

Many people have already seen the powerful video evidence posted to the YouTube website by independent journalist Paul Manly. The five-minute clip shows a remarkable scene near one of the green zone police lines, where a set of three “provocateurs", dressed as protesters and wielding rocks, are confronted by a group of trade unionists and young protesters, who suspect them of being police agents.

Tonight, at around 3:10am, a group of autonomous individuals claiming
no association, in solidarity with the actions and demonstrations
which are set to take place in Montebello, blocked a pair of train
tracks belonging to Canadian National (CN) with cement blocks.
The tracks were blocked near the Outremont train yard. We chose
to carry out this act of sabotage because we openly oppose the Security
and Prosperity Partnership (SPP) of North America, and we express our
direct solidarity with indigenous peoples in their struggle for self-
determination and the defense of their lands. We believe as well that
the tactics of choice of coalitions and convergence groups have a limited
impact in the face of intense economic, political, state, social, and police
repression under which we live, and we firmly assert that the time has
come to pass to action.

A Motion has been submitted to the Standing Committee on International Trade (CIIT). It is the first in a series of Motions Peter Julian will be submitting on behalf of the NDP to the CIIT.

August 19 will be a day of creative resistance and popular education against the SPP in the Montebello-area.
