Thursday, 17 April, is political prisoner's day. In Montreal, Ivan Apaolaza Sancho - a 36 year old Basque refugee claimant and political prisoner - has been in detention for over ten months.

The Minister of Public Security and Emergency Preparedness has held Ivan Apaolaza Sancho, a Basque refugee claimant, for the past nine months without presenting any evidence to sustain its allegations. The accusations against him are based entirely on a declaration made under torture.

My name is Ivan Apaolaza Sancho, I am a graduate in sociology and my nationality is Basque. I have been detained at the Rivières-des-Prairies detention centre in Montreal since June 29th 2007 on the basis of an arrest warrant issued by the Spanish state (and with the help of Immigration Canada).
