Afghan MP tells Ottawa Council to Stop Arms Shows

Michael Lessard, Monday, June 22, 2009 - 18:41 ( | | | | | )

Support our "Surge for Peace"
The letter (appended below) to Ottawa City Council comes from an Afghan woman MP who expresses her clear opposition to the use of Ottawa facilities for any military trade shows.

Malalai Joya is an elected Afghan Member of Parliament. However, in May 2007 she was barred from Parliament for three years because she had denounced the many foreign-backed warlords and drug barons who dominate her government. While the Afghan Parliament passed a law giving immunity to all Afghan's who have committed war crimes over the previous 25 years, it also passed a law saying that Afghan MPs could not criticise each other.

So it is permissible to have MPs in Afghanistan's parliament who are war criminals, but it is not permissible to have MPs in that Parliament who dare to risk death threats for merely criticising the presence of those war criminals. This is the democracy that Canada helped to install and is now protecting. Canada helped the US to replace Taliban warlords with other warlords from the "Northern Alliance" who killed tens of thousands of innocent civilians in Kabul alone during the 1990s.

Justice for Anas! Denounce the Montreal Police Brotherhood's motion to prevent a coroner's inquest

Anonyme, Friday, June 12, 2009 - 15:36 ( | )

Meanwhile, there is a new and more important question that the Montreal Police Brotherhood needs to answer which it conspicuously avoids addressing: how is it that the Brotherhood obtained full reports of the Quebec City police investigation and of the Crown Prosecutor’s decision? These documents have up until now been consistently denied to the public and to the Bennis family by the relevant authorities – including current Public Security Minister, Jacques Dupuis – under the pretence of being “confidential”. If they are confidential, how is it that the Montreal Police Brotherhood not only obtained them, but actually submitted them as part of their motion to have the coroner’s inquest quashed? It is reportedly to give the Brotherhood time to answer this question that the hearings originally scheduled for January 2009 were postponed to June 2009. It was during these hearings that the Brotherhood’s motion to quash the coroner’s inquest was to be heard. However, the Brotherhood’s legal team now presumably has to figure out how they will explain having obtained these documents.

Journalists from Tele5 caught by surprise with hidden camera.

The 11th of December 2008, in the context of the protests in Madrid in solidarity with the events in Greece, where a boy was murdered by a police bullet, Tele5 broadcasts an item made with a hidden camera to criminalize social movements.

The item broadcasted was shorter than they expected because the journalists were discovered by surprise.

NATO GAME OVER: peace activists close NATO headquarters (March'09)

Michael Lessard, Monday, March 23, 2009 - 12:24 ( | | | | | )

From all over Belgium, by bus, bike, taxi, public transport and even by walking, hundreds of activists came to NATO's headquarters in Evere, Brussels. They tried non-violently to enter the NATO terrain and seal gates, windows and doors. At the same time, the NATO has been symbolically buried during a farewell ceremony. Today, this burial is still a symbolic act, but the will to turn this symbol into reality is very high.
