Ivan Apaolaza Sancho came to Canada in 2001, hoping to escape the political repression against the Basque nationalist movement in Spain. Instead, he was imprisoned without trial for 16 months, labeled a security threat, denied the right to apply for refugee status in Canada, and deported to Spain on 18 October 2008. All on the basis of information that a Canadian tribunal recognized was probably obtained under torture. This photo-essay shows some parts of his struggle for security, freedom and justice in Canada. Le 20 octobre 2008 a eu lieu à Montréal une action marquant le septième anniversaire du début de la détention de Hassan Almrei. Cet événement fait partie d'une série d'actions créatives organisées à Montréal au cours de l'automne 2008 visant à exposer la complicité canadienne dans les actes de torture commis au nom de la prétendue "sécurité nationale". Inspirées de la Commission populaire sur les mesures de "sécurité" en immigration, chaque action traite de cas différents dans lesquels le Canada est impliqué dans la torture. More than 60 workers from Lamour are involved in a campaign for just compensation. Although the workers have been laid off in small groups, collectively, they believe these lay-offs should be considered collective and therefore they should be eligible for a substantial termination package. Many of them have been working for this company for more than 10 years, with some having more than 20 years of service. During this time, L'Amour Inc has become a very profitable company for its owners. L'Amour boasts that it is a leading company in the apparel industry and has operations in places like China, Pakistan, Bangladesh and India with over 2500 workers worldwide. A long-time partner of the retail giant Walmart, it recently broke into the US market in July, 2007, by taking over Terramar Sports, a company based in Tarrytown, New York, USA.

Omar Khadr, un canadien, est encore détenu à Guantanamo Bay. Il n'avait que 15 ans lorsqu'il a été fait prisonnier par l'armée américaine en Afghanistan. Le Canada est le seul allié des États-Unis qui n’a toujours pas rapatrié son ressortissant de ce camp de torture infâme. Des cassettes montrant des officiels canadiens en train d’interroger Khadr à Guantanamo en 2003 ont été télévisés à travers le Canada cet été dernier. Dans le cadre d'une semaine d'action pan-Canadienne, une rassemblement a été organisé le 6 octobre pour exiger qu'Omar soit rapatrié immédiatement. Cette action est aussi la troisième parmi une série de manifestations publiques opposant la complicité du Canada dans la torture au nom de la « sécurité » et mettant l’accent sur les cas d’Omar Khadr, Abdelrazik Abousfian, Abdullah Almalki, Ivan Apaolaza Sancho, Hassan Almrei et d’autres. Justice suffoquée Ivan Apaolaza Sancho fait face à une déportation vers l'Espagne par le Canada. Là-bas, il risque une détention « incommunicado », la torture et un procès injuste. On lui refuse le droit d'asile au Canada. Pendant sa lutte contre la déportation, Ivan a été détenu sans procès au Centre de détention de Rivière-des-Prairies à Montréal, et ce, depuis le mois de juin 2007. Et tout ceci justifié sur la base d'informations elles-mêmes obtenues par la torture. Le 24 septembre, ses avocats étaient en cour pour demander qu'il soit libéré de prison et le défendre contre cette menace de déportation. Dehors, un action en appui ... Ceci était la deuxième action créative à se tenir à Montréal à l'automne 2008 pour mettre sur la place publique la complicité canadienne dans la torture, et ce, au nom de la soi-disant sécurité nationale. As part of a National Day of Action for immigrant rights, Solidarity Across Borders again took to the streets, with our allies, to demand justice and dignity for all migrants. In opposition to deportations and detentions, we demand STATUS FOR ALL! There is no such thing as an "illegal" human being, only illegitimate laws and governments. Daily, we resist deportations and detentions, we fight for justice in the workplace, we demand safe and secure housing, and we oppose racism and racial profiling. In contrast to the xenophobia promoted by the false "reasonable accommodation" debate in Quebec, we took to the streets to celebrate our collective struggles for justice and dignity in all its diversity and strength. This year, we marched through the streets of Cote-des-Neiges, a predominantly poor, working class and immigrant neighbourhood. Les Artistes pour Kader Abdelkader Belaouni, ou Kader, vit en sanctuaire dans l'église St. Gabriel à Point-Saint-Charles depuis le 1er janvier 2006. Il ne peut la quitter, car il craint d'être arrêté et déporté. Pendant la fin de semaine des 9 et 10 août 2008, un groupe d'artistes montréalais-es ont lancé un projet de murale en soutien à Abdelkader. Le public a été invité à voir les artistes en action et à particper dans les ateliers d'art, de danse et de la musique offerts par des artistes locaux. La murale a été créée pour soutenir Abdelkader.
